When might you need electrical fault finding?

Fault finding is the work of locating why a circuit trips, a socket is dead or lights flicker. The cause may be an appliance, moisture, a loose connection or damaged cable. Replacing parts before the cause is known often leaves the fault in place.

Common reasons to request this service

  • An RCD or circuit that keeps tripping One reset is reasonable. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and describe what was in use at the time.
  • Intermittent faults Flickering, buzzing or a fault that appears only when something is plugged in still needs a proper test, not repeated resets.

What the electrician usually checks

The electrician tests the circuit and the connected equipment, and separates an appliance fault from a fault in the fixed installation. Further investigation is agreed if the first tests do not identify the cause.

What affects the cost

  • How long the testing takes
  • Whether access to floors, lofts or walls is needed
  • Replacement parts
  • Any remedial work found during the test

Safety

Call 999 if there is fire, smoke or someone has received a shock and needs urgent help. Do not open a consumer unit or keep resetting a device that trips at once.

Questions

Can I find the faulty appliance myself?

You can unplug appliances and try one reset. If the device trips with everything unplugged, or trips again immediately, stop and ask an electrician.
