When might you need socket installation?
Adding or replacing a socket is routine work, but it has to suit the circuit behind it. A loose, warm or cracked socket, or a room that relies on extension leads, is a reason to ask an electrician rather than to keep adding adapters.
Common reasons to request this service
- Damaged sockets Heat marks, cracking or a plug that will not stay in are reasons to stop using that socket and have it checked.
- Too few sockets Long-term use of extension leads is a common reason to add sockets on a suitable circuit.
What the electrician usually checks
The electrician identifies the circuit and the condition of the existing wiring, then confirms whether a new socket can be added or whether the circuit itself needs work.
What affects the cost
- The condition of the existing circuit
- Cable route and access
- Whether a new circuit is required
- Making good afterwards
Safety
Do not use a socket that is hot, smells of burning or sparks. If there is fire or smoke, leave and call 999. Switch off at the consumer unit only if you can do that without touching damaged equipment.
Questions
Is a new socket always a small job?
Not if the circuit is already fully used, the wiring is damaged, or a new circuit is needed. The electrician confirms that on site.
Who sets the price?
